"Loss," my dictionary tells me, appears to have evolved from an old English word meaning "destruction." I find that an interesting notion because nowadays I think the way we use the word suggests something more along the lines of a "something missing." And if you miss something, the natural tendency is to keep looking for it, trying to replace that which is gone.

Yet all things change. It was an ancient Greek philosopher who once said, "You can't step into the same river twice." This awareness of constant change is a singular human perception. But change, inevitably, means loss. Which means all people suffer loss in big and small ways. Yet people deal with loss differently, too, sometimes with a shrug - and forgetfulness - sometimes with constant yearning and a continual search for replacement.

The way we deal with loss - change - is perhaps one of the truly defining element of our personalities. Too often the modern world pretends it does not, should not happen. And maybe that's the greatest loss of all.

Change
i was never a real fan of change.. truthfully, the magninimity of fear i had for change was immeasurable.. but then, i read this excerpt from the book, the color of absence, & i guess i've come to some understanding of it.. the author conceptualizing it as a "loss" makes more sense to me than the common "change helps u to become someone in the future.".. the focus is thus shifted to the unseen tomorrow instead of celebrating what u have at the present and, in a way, leaving it behind to become that someone u've always wanted to become.. u don't necessarily forget who u were, but u build on it.. use it as a stepping stone.. i have not fully come to terms with change.. but i'm slowly accommodating it.. change is inevitable.. without it, there is no growth..

a lil seguay: "lay down your life, die to yourself, take up your cross and follow Jesus".. that is the ultimate form of change and loss of ur selfish self..
